Interview with Rob Monroe –editor of MMA Hawaii

You might notice Eric Pele’s picture from something other than fighting. Pele was on the reality show INKED filmed in Las Vegas at the Palms casino. Pele was a tattoo artist for the Huntington and Hart tattoo shop, featured on the reality show. But Pele is more than just a tattoo artist. He is a warrior and a ten fight veteran in the world of MMA.

At 6’ 2” tall and a whopping 315 pounds Eric Pele is certainly a large intimidating figure in the ring. Ask Cabbage or Roger Neff. Pele now 8-2-will be returning to fight in Hawaii for the second time on the X1 World Events card on October 6th. Back in July of 2000 Eric Pele made his pro MMA debut against UFC Vet Cabbage Correira on the Rings USA Rising Stars card here in Hawaii. Pele was off to great start beating Cabbage by way of arm bar at 2:30 of round two. Pele fought again that same night against Roger Neff and pulled out the unanimous decision win. MMA Hawaii sat down with the Eric Pele and spoke with him about coming back to fight in Hawaii. Pele “ Im very excited to be coming back to Hawaii to fight again, when I first fought there back in 2000 I felt a great vibe from the people, even though I was fighting Cabbage.

The people accepted me as their own because of my being Samoan. Im glad to be fighting a guy that is not local, I know I will have the crowd behind me.” Pele will be up against a rough tough, very experienced fighter in Vince Lucero 17-9-0 who has a solid record over some game opponents. Pele has faced the tougher competition although he doesn’t have near as many fights. The Samoan fighter has wins over Travis Fulton, Bobby Hoffman, UFC vets Cabbage and Big Dan Christison. Pele “ The defining fight in my career was actually a loss against Bobby Hoffman in my third fight. It was a reality check and I thought to myself , what am I doing in here? I was hurt badly in the first round and never really recovered but I sucked it up showed myself that I had huge heart and I fought through a lot of adversity. I proved to myself that I was a real fighter by not quiting.” Pele went on to beat Bobby Hoffman and get his revenge later on in his career. Pele who is now residing in Las Vegas is the father of two children. He has a son and daughter with his longtime girlfriend. Pele has trained with Gene Lewis and Marc Laimon and likes to expand his training by training with different people. JD Penn was Pele’s first Jiu Jitsu coach. Pele mentioned that his training is going really well. Pele “ I just this week cut back my workouts from three a days to just two a days. Im going to be ready to go the distance if I have to.” I asked him if he was looking for a shot in the UFC and he replied “ You know it doesn’t really matter to me? If so that would be great. I have fought in KOTC and am happy working with X1. It doesn’t matter really I just like to fight.” Pele’s closing comments were to ask the local Hawaii people to come out and be behind him for the fight. “ Im really excited to come back and fight there. The people are great and I get that great vibe from them.” October 6th at the Blaisdell Arena Pele invites the people of Hawaii to come out and support him.
