History
In ancient times, an annual Makahiki ceremony was held, in which peace was guaranteed for at least three or four months a year. Similar to the Olympics, Makahikis always included mokomoko boxing - similar to contemporary boxing matches), hakoko wrestling, and hakihaki bone-breaking or BJJ. Competitors were from select groups of warriors whom high chiefs retained as guards. These elite warrior guards constantly trained in lua and took great pride in competing publicly in the mokomoko boxing competitions. It is not GrappleFest intent to recreate Makahiki. We would like to be informative and mindful of past traditions while showcasing contemporary martial artist.

When
GrappleFest will hold a series of competition every month starting on April 6 2008   “Submission Sundays” in the Neal S. Blaisdell Center, Hawaii Room. These competition will be 8 man bracketed tournaments, using the new submission grappling rules Fila and USA Wrestling have establish for use in the Olympics and US World Team Trials. The final event  “GRAPPLEFEST” on Sept 6th 2008 in Neal S. Blaisdell Arena: will take the qualifying athletes for the previous tournaments to establish which clubs have the best competition team and the fighters. The  “GRAPPLEFEST”  event is a qualifier for the US World Team Trials. Top 4 men and top 3 women earn a chance to compete for a spot on the World Team. Pay "GrappleFest ProCard" GrappleFest goal is to make the tournaments and the referee’s as fair as possible. We believe by hiring local fighters whose craft is to know the positions and rules, will help us achieve this goal. We will pay local fighters to referee kids and adult matches at a sum of $150 per tournament. We will also give him two options to make more money. Option 1: Challenge Matches will be paid in addition to the $150 referee pay. GrappleFest will pay any ProCard fighter an addition $100 dollars to grapple a six minute match with an Intermediate Level Men’s Division Champion. Be mindful that this Challenge for your position and pay. You will receive the $100 win or loss. If you loss you can enter the Mens Intermediate bracket at the next tournament to challenge for your position back. Option 2: Any GrappleFest “ProCard” holder can enter the Absolute Bracket for the cash grand Prize. April 6th we are giving away $1000 dollars. Sept 6th the grand prize will be $2000 dollars.

The Challenge Match
Based on the great traditions of grappling sports such as wrestling and judo any Mens Intermediate Division Champion can challenge the lowest rank GrappleFest “ProCard” holder in his Division. This match will take place 15 minutes after the completion of Mens Intermediate Division bracket. The Champion in each Mens Intermediate Division will be offered a Challenge Match. Here are the outcomes:

A
If the lowest Rank GrappleFest “ProCard” holder refuses the match he will forfeit his spot to the Mens Intermediate Division Champion. This would make him a “ProCard” holder and entitle him to that Pros pay and spot for the day in the Absolute Bracket for the cash prize. If the Pro refuses the bout he will be suspended for the next event and will not be able to re-challenge for his spot back at the next event. But will be able to challenge there after.

B
If the match takes place and the Challenger wins he will become an instant Pro and be able to grapple in the Absolute Bracket for the cash prize. He then will be paid as a Pro. C If the Rookie Challenger wins the Absolute Bracket a special purse will be added in addition to the cash prize.
