B.J. Penn, MMAHawaii, and Barnes & Noble, Team Up To Support Hawaii Literacy
Story by Tanya V. Jularbal - MMA Hawaii Editorial Reporter

On Saturday, June 28, 2008, Hawaii native and UFC Lightweight Champion B.J. “The Prodigy” Penn teamed up with MMA Hawaii and Barnes & Noble at the Ala Moana shopping center to support Hawaii Literacy’s Classroom on Wheels Program, also referred to as “Bookmobile”. The program serves to promote “a life-long love of reading and learning” by providing access to vital tools such as books and computers. The “Bookmobile” makes weekly visits to residents along the coast of Waianae.

Many of the children who have benefited from the “Bookmobile” program were present at the signing yesterday. The children, grinning from ear to ear, held up two banners, which they made, to greet their idol. One read “Thank you for supporting Hawaii Literacy kids B.J. Penn”, and the other was covered with multi-colored signatures and thank you notes. Penn spent the next two hours graciously signing autographs and posing for pictures. Fans were able to purchase Penn-related books and DVDs, as well as the July issue of MMA Hawaii magazine which features Penn on the front cover. A portion of the proceeds raised at the event will be used to fund the “Bookmobile” program. For more information on Hawaii Literacy, visit their website at
