Hawaii MMA Events

Story by Bryanna Fissori

X1 “The Return” served as a testing ground for the Hawaii MMA community on multiple fronts. The once dominant promotion “X1 World Events” hosted its first MMA card in years at Aloha Stadium, a location that has not been used for combat sports in years, headlining a Hawaii fighter who has not graced the cage in years.

All of these returns were met with warm welcome from fans across the island. The event featured 19 match ups, 10 of which were part of the professional card. Rear naked chokes (RNC) were in high demand, with 4 out of the 10 pro bouts finishing from the position.
The semi-main event featuring the women 125lb bout was a major highlight of the evening. Every fan was on the edge of their seat as Hawaii’s Rachel Ostovich battled out three tough rounds against Misha Nassiri from California. Ostovich came out with thoughtful intention as she set up for repeated takedowns. Nassiri stayed composed and proved to have a strong defense against the grappling of Ostovich who had two armbar attempts in the first round. The second round started cautiously as well, but ended with a flurry of switching positions and ground and pound leading into a strong third round where Ostovich was able to secure back control for the majority of the round before taking Nassiri’s arm for the win late in the round. After the bout Ostovich accepted the promotions offer for a title fight.
The highly anticipated main event did not go the way most island MMA fans were hoping, but there no less respect for 40 year old local fighter and former Strikeforce, Bellator and X1 veteran Falaniko Vitale. Both Vitale and opponent Jamie Jara came out hard landing significant blows and jockeying for dominant pressure against the cage. Vitale was rocked in the first round but recovered and stood his ground. Jara landed some more big punches in the second round keeping the pressure on before ending the bout with rear naked choke.
The X1 promotion made the announcement that they will be offering Vitale a position with the company as their commissioner of MMA. The promotion asserted a number of times that their goal is to help fighters get to the next level. The degree of competitive spirit and technical skill demonstrated by all 38 fighters on the card looks promising for the future of athletes climbing the ranks through the X1 promotion.
