HONOR AND INTERGRITY 5 Years ago Karma: 0
Wednesday, October 16, 2002

It is so hard to see why people can lie about their age and training background to get a fight. This person and his coach tried to convince people that he is 16 years old and never boxed before.I feel sorry for any man who is a CHAMPION and has won numerous medals, championships at a National level. This person was undefeated for seven years never losing a fight. I applaud a person who is a 21 year old man and has a caliber to be a pro boxer to jump in the ring with a 16 year old boy who is only a amatuer and has had only 3 fights. You and your coach should pat yourselves on the back and feel real proud of yourselves. I heard you were bragging that you knocked this young boy out and was proud of yourself. I am glad to see that there is still honor and intergrity in this proud state of Hawaii .

I commend and applaud this 16 year old boy for getting into the ring with the 21 year old man. I learned that the boy found out that night he was going against a golden glove boxer who had won numerous medals and championships and still decided to get into the ring even though he knew this.To me this is a true Champion.

What he did is no different than Dennis Alexio getting into the ring with one of the bigger guys last night, and stating that he is only"16 with one fight" And then trying to hurt the kid for no other reason than just trying to hurt him.

Miyose picks school
over a trip to the world
boxing championship

For most 17-year-old boxers, a choice between taking an all-expense paid trip to compete for a world championship and spending a week in school would be simple.

FL MORRIS / FMORRIS@STARBULLETIN.COM
Glenn Miyose took up boxing 10 years ago and went undefeated in his first seven years. He suffered his first setback in the semis of the 2000 Junior Olympics, finishing with a bronze medal.

And for Waianae senior Glenn Miyose Jr., it was.

Miyose, the national champion in his weight class, decided the chance to earn a 4.0 grade point average outweighed a shot at a title and declined his invitation to fight in the Under-19 World Championships in Santiago, Cuba, last month to avoid falling behind in school.

"It was easy (to turn down the trip)," Miyose said. "I had to go to school."

Miyose will finally get a taste of international competition this weekend when he joins a team of top U.S. boxers in Harvey, Ill., to face a squad from the Dominican Republic.

Miyose is the youngest U.S. fighter in the open-adult competition which runs Friday to Sunday.

"When you go to the nationals, you only represent Waianae, now he's representing the United States," said Bruce Kawano, Miyose's trainer.

"And you know the Dominican Republic is going to bring their best fighters. You don't come to the U.S. bringing scrubs."

Miyose, a member of the Doug Westbrook Boxing Club in Waianae, earned a chance to fight for the world championship by winning the gold medal in the 125-pound weight class at the Everlast Fran Jones Under-19 National Championships in Reno, Nev. He defeated Damon Murillo of California 11-5 in the finals on Aug. 17.

Kini Sofa Jr., another Waianae product, won the national title in the 112-pound class. The event marked the first time two Hawaii boxers claimed national championships in the same year.

To prepare for the nationals, Kawano took Miyose to Maui to train near the summit of Haleakala. His workouts on the Valley Isle paid off as Miyose wasn't fazed by Reno's altitude in winning four bouts.

However, between the Reno trip and time spent in training, Miyose had fallen behind in school. So with just two weeks between the national and world championships, he decided to stay home and catch up with his studies.

He was the only national gold medalist not to participate in the world championships.

"My dad wanted me to go at first but I had to go to school," Miyose said.

Kawano estimates the trip -- paid for entirely by USA Boxing -- cost $4,700 per person and included airfare, hotel, meals, uniform, taxes, tours and $400 in spending money.

Still, Miyose said his family and friends came to understand his decision, which also resulted in joy in California.

"(Murillo) was so happy," said Kawano, an assistant coach with the U.S. team at the world championships. "He said he couldn't believe it when he got the call."

Murillo won his first fight in Cuba, but lost in the second round of the tournament. Sofa lost his first bout.

Miyose admits to being nervous about making his debut in international competition this week, but is looking forward to seeing how his defensive, counter-punching style works against boxers from another country.

"I just want to see how they fight and see if they're good," said the soft-spoken senior.

Miyose started boxing 10 years ago when his cousin invited him to come to a workout. It took a while for the sport to get into his blood, but he eventually became a devotee who now spends two hours every day training in the boxing room at the Waianae Regional Park gym.

Miyose went undefeated over his first seven years of boxing, suffering his first loss in the semifinals of the 2000 Junior Olympics where he took the bronze.

Miyose's technique and natural quickness allowed him to rise to elite status, but Kawano said his ring intellect gives him the edge in many fights.

"He picks it up quick and he listens," Kawano said. "If he loses the first round and I tell him to do something else, he adjusts. If I tell him to change his style, he'll change his style.

"At first he'll try to be a defensive boxer, if I tell him in the second round to be aggressive, he'll attack," Kawano added.

Miyose harbors dreams of boxing in the 2004 Olympic Games and starting a professional career. But not before taking care of business in the classroom.

"I wanted him to go (to the world championships), but school comes first," Kawano said. "In boxing you can take a lot of trips."

ok ok...i know glenn's feeling's were hurt when he got knocked out at HFC stand you ground, i also understand that he needed to "redeem" himself in some sort of way......THIS WAS NOT THE WAY!!!!!!!!! I give mad props to Bronson for hanging in there, but this fight should not have happened. When your under 18 don't you need your parents to be there to sign a waiver, well if his age was in question at the weigh in he should have been told by the promotoer to show proof of his age, don't you think? it won't say much for his experience, but the fight would not have happened if his age was revealed.

is glenn washed up?? is that why he "had" to have this fight?? i guess a 4.0 is only good in school, it doesn't make you a better person in the outside world.

i know this is out of character for me to write so openly, but it has to be said.

Wow!! I'm really sadden that this had to happen. Intergrity and honor must not be part of this fighter vocabulary. Another sad day for the sport I love.

HONOR and INTEGRITY? i got the chance to check out the PIP event last night and seen the DETERIORATION of integrity in alot of the younger generation. i mean i like rap music and all but some of the entrance songs were NUTS...f this and f that i`ll break your effin neck.there`s a time and place for that type of music, maybe in the back before they walk out so they can get hyped but not over the main sound system where everybody and there grama has to hear it. and that wasn`t the worst of it.listening to some of the kids (and i mean kids, maybe 9 to 14 years old) talk, geez if i said some of the words that were coming from them, even now my moms would bust out the bottle "chilla peppa water"and the bar soap and the guava branch..i know you cannot change the way your neighbors are talking but this is just an observation that was made.that`s why i feel we need to have more responsible role models in the ring for the youth to look up to.you can see at these fights that a lot of the young kids want to be jus like the champs and if the champs are acting a fool showing no respect for anyone even the corner men, then that`s the way the young bucks are gonna act...jus a suggestion to the promoter B.K. I KNOW YOU WANT TO FILL SEATS at your events .maybe you should clean it up a little. you`ll be appealing to a wider variety of customers. just trying to make a positive impact.

On a positive note...
I was lucky enough to catch Jacob Smith's fight. I saw him at the last PIP fight too. Can't believe he is only 13 -- what a class act. I hope PIP is lucky enough to get him on the card at every event. He can definitely kick and that has to be his taekwondo training but he's got good hands too. With his skill, ring etiquette and class he'll go far. I wanted to find out when he will fight next - called Smith Taekwondo where he trains and found out he's already on a plane to Las Vegas. He's got a fight on Saturday! So I guess add dedication and stamina to this kid's qualities.
