Sad and sobering news has crossed the wire today about an outstanding member of the Hawaii MMA family. Keka Doi Toilolo of Team Makaha is in critical condition at Hawaii Medical Center West, after battling with serious health issues. The 21 year old fighter has been a key member of the local MMA scene for a long time now, and has devoted his life to training himself and others in the ways of Mixed Martial Arts. His fights in the cage were never short of heart and determination, and his dedication is nearly unmatched. Now he is fighting a much different battle and needs our support.
Keka has been struggling with kidney issues since the age of 16. More recently he was told that he could no longer fight until he received a kidney transplant. The waiting list would prove to keep him on hold for a possibility of years. He has been undergoing dialysis 4 days a week for several months as he continued to battle his illness. But he never took a negative outlook on his situation. He has continued to attend every event with a smile on his face and a positive and uplifting attitude. I had several chances to speak with him about his condition, and he never failed to amaze me with his positive outlook.
Keka is a member of the strongest family in the world. The Hawaii MMA family. No matter what team you are with, or even if you had faced him in the cage, he always gave so much support to all fighters, teams, and trainers. Even though he has been in a weakened state, he has continued to help train and teach others with Team Makaha. I can honestly say that I have never seen him without a smile on his face or good things to say about all the local fighters. I can even recall when he fought at the first 808 Battleground and didn’t even have a corner man. But he will not be fighting this battle without one. He will have the entire MMA Community in his corner. Little information is available at this time about what can be done, but any information that can be released , will be released as soon as possible. We as a family should all come together and show Keka just how important he is to Hawaii and to all of us. He is a brother in arms, a warrior of Hawaii, and a friend to us all. So lets all unite in sending him our best wishes and prayers, in hopes that he will continue to live his young life doing what he loves.
