On May 4th, at War Memorial Gym on Maui, a battle will take place between two leviathans that will send shockwaves across all of the islands. Chad Thomas will take on Lolohea Mahe, in one of the most anticipated Heavyweight fights that Hawaii has ever seen.
These two fighters are big, and they mean business. For Lolohea, he will be in his own backyard. Maui is his stomping grounds and a place where he can take the home field advantage. But Chad Thomas, of the Big Island, is not viewing that as a bad thing but more of a motivator.
" I don't think he can know what to expect," said Thomas. " I always look for improvement and try to get better. Honestly, I don't even know what to expect. Both of us could have the best game plan in the world, but once we are in the cage throwing punches it all changes."
This fight will be a move up in competition for Chad. He has yet to have faced an opponent with the experience that Lolohea has. After a war for the ages with Scott Junk, Lolo was seen in promotions such Strikeforce for multiple fights.
"My strengths are my stand up, and my experience," said Mahe. " I know he is strong and aggressive and prepared for anything. But I have a lot of experience and I have been doing a lot of ground work and I'm working on rounding everything out."
Heavyweight fights are not very frequent here on the islands, as the lighter weight classes have most of the depth. So when a fight of this magnitude comes along, it is easy to see why the fans are all about it. But the two seem to have a different view on how the fight should unfold.
"Whoever hits the hardest and connects the best will win" said Mahe." I am not just going to stand in there and see who can take the most punches. For the first time in my career, I am coming into this fight as the smaller fighter. But even if this fight goes three rounds, I have got to just destroy him in all three rounds. It has to be decisive."
The two both carry such respect for one another, and as they were both speaking of their opponent, it was clear that neither was looking past. For Lolohea, he sees a strong and humble fighter who is trying to get some of the opportunities that Lolo himself has had. And for Chad, he will be facing a man that he is in fact a fan of.
There is no denying the excitement in the air ever since this bout was announced. And on May 4th, Just Scrap will be bringing the anticipation to life at War Memorial Gym.
