This saturday in Lahaina, Just Scrap will be delivering a headlining fight between Maui's own, Kendall Grove, and 30 fight veteran, Joe Cronin.
The two will serve as the main event for Just Scrap's second trip to the Valley Isle, so we spoke with Grove to get his take on the bout.
" Joe Cronin is a crafty veteran. I'm not going to look past him at all. We are gonna go out there on Saturday and find out who the best man is that night."
Grove, who is from Maui, sees this opportunity as one that hasn't come about since 2005 when he last fought on his home turf. But where the fight takes place doesn't really matter to the former UFC middleweight. He only cares about the fight itself. The venue, the homefield advantage, the odds, these are all things that have no worth once the cage door is closed.
Coming off of a Decision victory over formerly undefeated Stikeforce fighter, Derek Brunson, Grove still has the sweet taste of victory lingering. He does not plan on letting that flavor go away. Through any means needed, he prepares to defeat Cronin Saturday night.
"A fight is a fight. I want to find his weakenesses, expose them, and capitolize on that" Said Grove. " It's no different for me to be fighting in front of 16,000 fans or 1,500. I'm fighting here at home, and I want the fans to get what they want."
Cronin, a veteran of over 30 pro MMA fights, is riding a three fight win streak as he comes into hostile territory to take on "Da Spyder". And though many may not know who Cronin is, Grove warns everyone never to overlook a veteran. He will surely be taking this fight as serious as anyone. But there is one way that Kendall views the sport that may give him a slight mental edge. To him, it's more than just a paycheck, or a claim to fame. For Grove, it's a spiritual journey.
"Fighting can help you find yourself in a lot of ways" Said Grove. " For me, it has made me a better father, and a better human being. It's a way of life. It's natural."
As fight day gets closer, Grove is enjoying the ability to cut his weight at his own home, instead of hotels and health clubs. And he is also prepated mentally to go to battle for the Hawaii fans once again. This will be his thrid fight back since his return to Hawaii competition, and he plans on making it, the most entertaining of them all.
Kendall would also like to thank all of his friends and family and hawaii supporters. Also Hawaiian Fight Gear, Defend Hawaii, Lahaina Tattoo, and GoShopNation.com for supporting him.
