Could the winner of Guida vs Bendo meet the Champ, Frankie Edgar, in Japan? Should they? The scuttlebutt around the MMA community is in full force now, as multiple sources close to the UFC have leaked that the "possible" match up is now a sure thing. Both fighters have been campaigning for a title shot to the extreme recently with impressive wins over key contenders in the divison.
It was thought that Strikeforce Lightweight Champ, Gilbert Melendez, would take the shot first, but contractual obligations to defend his title at the December Strikeforce event have thrown a wrench in those plans. So we are left with the Carpenter and the Smooth one.
Guida dominated highly hyped former WEC Lightweight Champ, Anthony "Showtime" Pettis, with strong wrestling and unstoppable ground and pound in order to slingshot his name to the top of the contenders list. Ben Henderson also made a strong case with his last string of wins inside the octagon. Bendo Overwhelmed Jim Miller, to the shock of Miller as well as those watching, like no fighter has done before. Both of these fighters are highly active, highly touted, and high on the rankings so the decision to give the winner a shot at the champ seems fitting.
