As much of the MMA community now knows, Dan Miller and his wife Kristin have endured more loss in two years than any parents should have to in a lifetime. The couple's first child, Alexis, passed shortly after birth, and their son Danny Jr. was born with autosomal recessive PKD, a disease which is often fatal in babies. Although Danny has beat the odds more than once, he remains on dialysis every day of his life since he was two months old. Danny will soon be receiving a kidney transplant which will allow him to come back off dialysis for the first time, however insurance is not covering the cost of the living donor providing him with this gift, and Danny will require anti-rejection medication for the rest of his life. In the immediate months following surgery they have been told to anticipate nearly $10,000 per month in required medication, of which only partial coverage will be provided.
In order to help pay for this essential surgery which will allow Danny, for the first time in his life, to live the happy and carefree life that every child should, friends and family of the Millers have started the Daniel James Miller Foundation. The folks over at AMA Fight Club (the stable of the Miller Bros., Charlie Brenneman, Andy Main, etc.) are staging a benefit on December 3rd to raise money for the Daniel James Miller Foundation. The December 3rd event will include a BJJ/wrestling seminar featuring the Miller Bros and Brenneman, and will also include a Muay Thai seminar. The four-hour long super seminar will be led by several UFC fighters, and will feature give aways which include UFC-worn gear, autographed memorabilia and memberships at AMA Fight Club, home to man y UFC and Strikeforce fighters.
If you can not make it to the seminar, a non-profit organization is taking tax-deductible donations for Danny and the wheels are in motion for a fund-raising auction of UFC gear. I encourage you to head over to the Foundation's blog to read more about Danny and PKD, and to stay abreast of the latest drives. If you've ever sat down and enjoyed a Miller Brothers bout, this is an opportunity to make a tangible difference in the life of a member of their family, and to provide a child with a better life he so thoroughly deserves, and there's ways to do so where it's tax deductible, to boot. Information on the seminar can be found here , or on the Foundation's Facebook page here. Paypal for donations can be found here.
