In the coming months there will be several clashes in the UFC cage that may or may not have implications for title contention, but with or without that promise they will still be good old fashioned cage fights. And isn't that what we, the MMA fans, are excited to see. Lets take a look at one of the most promising fights that will befall us, and try to find that nugget of awesomeness that doesn't feed in the the statistic followers breakdowns. Jim Miller will be taking on Melvin Guillard at next weeks UFC on FX 1.
Miller, who was recently roughed up by the now number one contender, Ben "Smooth" Henderson. Miller had been on an amazing run up to that point. The often overlooked prospect makes his fights exciting with fearless flying fists and a submission game that has claimed limbs from the likes of Charles Oliveira, and Duane Ludwig. His furious fists have taken out brute slugger, Kamal Shalorus. On the cusp of a title shot, Miller dropped a fight. But a win over "The Young Assassin" could quite possibly toss him to the top of the pack. Or not, we've seen how these things have gone before.
Guillard is a top notch contender himself. With an outstanding 7 TKO's in the UFC alone, Guillard is a dangerous and ferocious opponent. Since moving to Jackson's MMA in Albuquerque, New Mexico, he has tremendously improved his takedown defense, as well as his punching offense towards wrestlers. Many people think that in order to defeat Guillard he must merely be taken down and submitted but getting him to the ground is much harder than it appears. His lone loss in his last couple of fights came to a flash knockdown followed by submission at the hands of Joe Lauzon. Hungry and ready for a title shot, Guillard won't make this fight easy for miller.
I see this fight shaking down two ways. . . First, it could be a back and forth fight of the night or, secondly, it could be a quick finish by either man. There will be no stalling. There will be no canceling out of talent. These two come to fight. And that is exactly what they will do.
