Walt Carvalho is more than just a cutman. He has been a major player in the MMA game here in Hawaii, and around the world, for quite some time now. Though many may not know his travels, Coach Wally has certainly seen it all.
The coach has seen everything from the bright lights of Strikeforce and the UFC, to events in China, Thailand, and now. . . India. The Super Fight League ( or the SFL ) was Coach Wally's recent reason for leaving the islands and heading over to India for their inaugural event. It was a barrier breaking event in the country who had never seen a promotion quite like that before. They had grown accustomed to professional wrestling or staged fighting. The wonder, excitement, and reality of MMA came rushing through in a rather well played out event which is run by well respected bollywood elite.
It was nearly 6 months ago that our local promoter, cutman, advocate, and Coach was contacted by the promotion. The two energetic and determined promoters said that they wanted only the best. They wanted to build their company and the sport along with it. According to Coach Wally, unlike many promoters these guys really wanted to learn, and not just act like they knew what they were doing. So he agreed to head up their cutmen and headed to India.
Along his travels, and during the event, all new doors began to open for the Wally himself, as well as Hawaii. Read more in depth about Coach Wally's travels to India and his work with the SFL in an upcoming issue of MMA Hawaii Magazine.
