It was announced today, via his Twitter account, that the Brazilian submission machine known as Demian Maia, will be dropping to Welterweight for his next UFC appearance.

"Guys, now I'll be moving down to 170 pounds," Maia stated."Next fight, I'll be a welterweight."

Maia as made 13 UFC appearances, and they have all been at Middleweight. He even once competed for the Championship Belt against Anderson Silva, in which he lost a decision. His last performance against Chris Weidman was widely criticized for being boring. Maia tirelessly attempted to put Weidman out, but could not muster the stand up game to do it. Also, any attempt to take him down was futile.

Maia feels that he size and weight advantage that most of his Middleweight competitors hold over him, will be nonexistent at Welterweight. But only time will tell. He has not yet made a test cut to 170, but thinks that he can make the weight. We shall see.
