The call-out bout between Canada's Rory Macdonald and Hawaii's own BJ Penn has been scratched due to a giant gash on the head of Macdonald suffered during training.
Soon after the cancellation of the fight, Macdonald began campaigning for rescheduling at UFC 154 in Montreal, while BJ pushed for UFC 153 in Rio. But both were barking up the wrong tree. The bout is now being targeted for Network television as the Co-Main Event at UFC on FOX 5 on Dec. 8.
There has yet to be confirmation on the venue for the event, but the fact that it will be on free television makes for an interesting addition to the dynamic of the fight, which in all honesty could easily be the headliner. And many would rather be a 5 rounder.
Before the announcement of this fight, Penn had retired following his loss to Nick Diaz at UFC 137. But Rory Macdonald called out the former two division champ shortly after his TKO stoppage of Che Mills at UFC 145. As we all know, BJ accepted and the rest has been a media frenzy.
Hopefully this date and event will be nailed down and confirmed soon. Stay logged in here at MMAhawaii.com to get the latest as it unfolds.
